Understanding by Design
UBD stands for Understanding by Design. It's an educational framework developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe that focuses on designing curriculum and instruction based on desired learning outcomes. The main idea behind Understanding by Design is to start the curriculum design process with the end goals in mind, emphasizing understanding and transfer of knowledge rather than mere coverage of content.
Identifying Desired Results
This involves determining what students should understand, know, and be able to do by the end of the learning experience. It often involves defining overarching goals, essential questions, and desired understandings.
Determining Acceptable Evidence
Once the desired results are identified, educators plan how to assess whether students have achieved those results. This may involve designing assessments such as tests, projects, or performances that demonstrate understanding and application of knowledge.
Designing Learning Experiences and Instruction
With the end goals and assessment methods in mind, educators then plan instructional activities and experiences that will help students achieve the desired results. This may involve selecting learning materials, designing lessons, and implementing strategies to support student learning.
